Managing partners and senior management from independent law firms met at the Independent Law Firms Forum in London on the 17th of March.

The topic for the conference was “Exploring new markets and new ways of doing business”.

Per Magnusson was speaking about managing changes within the firm, giving some key tips for success.

Per also participated in the following panel discussion with County Governor Per Unckel, State Secretary Oscar Wåglund Söderström and Stephan Müchler of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Southern Sweden on the subject “Growth and competitiveness in the Baltic Sea Region”. EU minister Birgitta Ohlsson opened the meeting and the Minister of industry and communications in Estland, Juhan Parts, also made a speech.

Afterwards Per was interviewed by Swedish Radio.
 

Per Magnusson spoke at the Baltic Sea Region Investors Panel (Tuesday, 8 March, 14:00). His presentation entitled “Regional Thinking as Competitive Edge” focused on working and investing in the Baltic Sea Region.

MIPIM, the annual world’s premier real estate summit, was held in Cannes, France, from 8-11 March 2011.

Igor Hanas spoke about the legal formula of the waste combustion plant investment (private-public partnership, concessions, etc) and Przemysław Kastyak focused on administrative and legal requirements (environmental regulations).

The conference was organised under the patronage of the Mayor of Warsaw.

Belarus – 9,6 million inhabitants, once the workshop of the Soviet Union. Today, seldom mentioned in Scandinavian media; a Swedish striking loss in hockey in the 2002 Olympics and political issues are usually what comes to mind for the general public here.

The country however deserves much further Scandinavian attention – a young market, with relatively few foreign companies, and a well educated work force within, for example, IT and industrial production. The Belarusian state is privatizing more than 500 companies presently, and gives foreign companies assistance and simplified taxation when establishing. The customs union with Russia and Kazakhstan from July 2010 favors production in Belarus for export to the EU or Russia and east.

This panel will explore ways of harnessing the potential provided by the first EU macro regional framework of cooperation. This panel will provide an overview of the scope of EU and regional financial opportunities, measures and tools offered within the Baltic Sea Region aimed at underpinning the envisaged EU Baltic Sea strategy. It will discuss opportunities of a secure access to capital in the region and proposed schemes aimed at exploiting economies of scale and scope in investing and lending. The participants will be offered an opportunity to address the speakers directly with related questions to the theme.

In many companies the external lawyer and the in-house counsel plays an active role in determining which approach a company chooses to manage its workforce, for example when it comes to terminations, regardless of the fact that these decisions should be very much HR-driven. How does a company for example approach HR issues like employees who cheat, don’t perform, are often sick, breaches company policies, criticizes management, shifts to the competition, etc. Legally it is possible to establish rules on how to react, but this does not mean that it is clever from an HR perspective to choose the legal approach every time. On the other hand will a “soft” HR approach to these issues affect the company’s possibilities going forward. The question is therefore, which approach should prevail?

The last few years have been a time of great prosperity for the Polish real estate market. Now the global crisis has shaken the foundations of the market and left investors wondering what's next. How will the fallout affect Poland's real estate market?

The event was held in Warsaw on 14-15 November, 2008 under the auspices of the International Bar Association, the Polish Bar Council, the National Chamber of Legal Advisers, the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe and the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights.

Dan Person, Managing Partner of Magnusson, took part in the conference as a Vice-President of the Foreign Department of the Swedish Bar Association. Dan participated in a panel discussion on "Public trust in the legal profession as an inherent feature of a democratic state of law".

The seminar took place in Odense on 12th November 2008. The firm was represented by Krzysztof Nowicki (Warsaw) and Aage Krogh (Copenhagen).
