Magnusson’s environmental law team, consisting of Mårten Tagaeus (responsible partner) and Sascha Andersson, has successfully represented the Municipality of Jönköping in the permit application process under the Environmental Code for continued and expanded wastewater treatment operations at the Simsholmen wastewater treatment plant.
The permit application was submitted to the Environmental Assessment Delegation by Magnusson in June 2020 and included, amongst other things, the construction of a new biological treatment stage.
In May 2024, the Municipality of Jönköping obtained an environmental permit. However, the environmental permit was subject to conditions that deviated from established practice. Therefore, Magnusson was instructed to appeal to the Land and Environment Court, which in October 2025 amended the permit and its conditions in accordance with Magnusson’s claims.
Due to the wastewater treatment plant’s unusually central location in proximity to the region’s main drinking water supply, the process has involved several complex legal considerations to ensure that the facility meets all modern environmental requirements. The assignment has been carried out in close collaboration with Sweco, which has, amongst other things, prepared the environmental impact assessment and contributed technical expertise.
– We are very pleased to have been able to assist the Municipality of Jönköping in this important process, which enables both the modernisation of the wastewater treatment plant and the municipality’s future expansion, says Mårten Tagaeus, partner at Magnusson.
