Magnusson has successfully assisted Stockholm Vatten AB in the environmental permit process for the Henriksdal wastewater treatment plant

Magnusson’s environmental law team, consisting of Mårten Tagaeus (responsible partner), Sascha Andersson, Jorunn Sjölund Jurado and Ida Zackariasson, has successfully assisted Stockholm Vatten AB in the permit application process under the Environmental Code for continued and expanded wastewater treatment operations at the Henriksdal wastewater treatment plant.

Henriksdal wastewater treatment plant is Sweden’s largest wastewater treatment plant and processes wastewater from industries and close to one million residents in Stockholm and Huddinge, as well as the neighbouring municipalities of Haninge, Nacka, Tyresö, Järfälla, Sundbyberg and Ekerö.

The permit application was submitted to the Land and Environment Court by Magnusson in November 2024 and included permit for ongoing and additional groundwater abstraction and legal validation of existing water facilities. The application also included a minor expansion. The application is part of the Stockholm Future Wastewater Treatment project, which aims to develop Henriksdal wastewater treatment plant into one of the world’s most modern wastewater treatment plants.

In December 2025, Stockholm Vatten AB received an environmental permit from the Land and Environment Court in accordance with Magnusson’s claims.

Due to the location of the facility inside the Henriksdal hill, the process has involved several complex legal considerations related to the hydrogeological conditions in the underground system.

– We are very pleased to have been able to assist Stockholm Vatten AB in this important process, which ensures continued wastewater management for close to one million residents whilst developing the facility to meet future needs, says Mårten Tagaeus, partner at Magnusson.
